Memory lane fashion

Do you ever look back at old photos of yourself and wonder, "What was I thinking?" Well, I'm sure I wasn't the only fashion trailblazer ahead of my time. Growing up, we all had our unique style influences that shaped our quirky personalities, Let's take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of the fashion trends that made us who we are today.

Rara Skirts: Twirl Like Nobody's Watching

Remember those flouncy, frilly skirts that made you feel like a ballerina? Rara skirts were all the rage back in the day. You couldn't help but twirl around, showing off your fabulous fashion sense. Whether you paired it with a neon top or a denim jacket, you were the epitome of coolness.

My mum ensured I had quite a few twirly skirts, I think she just enjoyed making them.

The Gypsy Look: Bohemian Dreams

The gypsy dress and skirt were a bohemian dream come true. With their flowing silhouette and vibrant patterns, they transported us to a world of free-spirited fashion. We twirled and danced, feeling like modern-day bohemian princesses. The gypsy dress was a symbol of our carefree nature and love for all things whimsical. Paired with a peasant top and some chunky jewelry, the gypsy skirt became a symbol of wanderlust and creativity.

I had a lovely white broderie anglaise petticoat I wore underneath most skirts, to lengthen and add a gypsy quality.

Edwardian Ruffle Shirts: Channeling femininity

Who says you can't bring a touch of historical elegance into the modern world? Edwardian ruffle shirts were the perfect way to add a dash of sophistication to your wardrobe. With their delicate lace and intricate ruffles, you were a walking work of art. Plus, they made you feel like you were a heroine in a novel.

And I do think those ruffled collars lift your chin and head a little higher.

Red Leather Lace-Up Boots: Walking on the Wild Side

When it came to footwear, nothing says "fashion rebel" quite like a pair of red leather lace-up boots, the epitome of edgy fashion. These boots were made for walking, stomping, and making a statement. With their bold color and lace-up design, they added a rebellious touch to any outfit. Whether you paired them with skirts or ripped jeans, red leather lace-up boots were a symbol of confidence and individuality.

Yes I had a pair of red leather lace up boots, and I felt like the bees knees in them.

Adam Ant: Embrace Your Inner New Romantic

Speaking of rebels, when it came to fashion icons Adam Ant was the epitome of cool. This British musician not only rocked the stage with his catchy tunes but also set the fashion world ablaze with his flamboyant style. From his iconic pirate inspired outfits, signature face paint, to his dashing tricorn hat, you couldn't help but be influenced by his unique fashion sense. He showed us that fashion is all about embracing your individuality and having fun with your wardrobe, by pushing the boundaries of fashion and encouraging us all to do the same. The New Romantic movement took the world by storm, and we eagerly embraced it.

I embraced it with two New Romantic style shirts from C&A. They were red check and green check warm brushed cotton, which I wore with a green corduroy three piece suit "passed down" from my brother. I altered the trousers in to breeches and finished the look with an old trilby hat.

The Grandad Shirt: Embracing Vintage Vibes Before It Was Cool

Who needs a tailored blouse when you can wear an over-sized collarless shirt with vintage vibes? The grandad shirt proved that borrowing from the boys could result in a seriously stylish look. It was the perfect blend of comfort and effortless style! Plus, it made you feel like a rebel without a cause.

I had the most amazing vintage grandad shirts in pale denim blue cotton and I loved them. They were so long I could have worn them as dresses, but I generally paired them with leggings or jeans.

Your Grandad's Waistcoat: Vintage Chic at Its Finest

Who would have thought that raiding your grandad's wardrobe could lead to so many fashion revelations?  Your grandad's waistcoat became a beloved fashion item and added a touch of sophistication and nostalgia to your look. Whether you wore it over a shirt, t-shirt, with jeans or a dress, this unexpected fashion choice made you stand out from the crowd. A dapper delight!

Or was that just me! The one I "sweet talked" into my wardrobe is a beautiful red velvet floral brocade with silk back and lining. A great way to add some personality to a plain shirt (usually my grandad shirt) and jeans.

The Cravat: Adding a Touch of Elegance

Whether you wore it with a tailored suit, a casual shirt or t-shirt, or loosely draped under the collar of a coat, it instantly elevated your look. It was a subtle nod to the past, showcasing your appreciation for timeless fashion.

I "sweet talked" a couple of lovely ones into my wardrobe from both my grandad and my dad, And I still love wearing them.

Fishnet Tights: The Quirky Twist

These unconventional leg-wear options added a touch of edginess to any outfit. Whether you paired them with a skirt, shorts, or even ripped jeans, fishnet tights were the ultimate fashion statement. They were like a secret weapon, instantly transforming your look from ordinary to extraordinary.

Fishnet tights were the perfect accompaniment to red leather lace up boots. Very edgy!

Trilby Hat: Topping Off Your Quirky Look

No outfit was complete without a trilby hat perched jauntily on your head. This stylish accessory added a touch of mystery and sophistication to your ensemble. Whether you were channeling your inner detective or simply trying to hide a bad hair day, the trilby hat was a go-to fashion statement.

And if you were a fan of old movies, as I was/ am, they look super cool.

Cutting Up Your Brother's Suit: DIY Fashion at Its Finest

Who needs store-bought clothes when you can create your own fashion masterpieces? Taking your brothers three piece corduroy suit and transforming it  into an eye catching jodhpurs ensemble that showcased your DIY skills, was the ultimate act of rebellion. Plus, it was a great way to annoy your brother.

Looking back, it's clear that certainly my fashion choices growing up were anything but ordinary. And I can appreciate in some cases they where a bold statement that showcased a fearless approach to fashion. Taking risks, standing out from the crowd, I strutted my stuff with pride.

Each style we embrace adds a layer of quirkiness to our personality, making us the wonderfully unique individuals we are today. So, embrace your fashion journey and continue to let your style reflect your playful and humorous spirit! I know I intend to!

In fact ...... just last year I purchased a vintage pure cashmere Crombie coat, with the classic French highwayman shape and wide period cuffs. It needed a little tlc to restore the beauty of the cashmere, creative applique where age and moths had worn the fabric, and mismatched vintage buttons to replace lost originals. But now, to quote Adam Ant, it is more than ready to "stand and deliver"! There's something undeniably charming about incorporating vintage pieces into our outfits.

Here's to continuing having fun on this style journey, because that is truly what fashion is about. And remember to keep adding a little bit of quirkiness and playfulness to your wardrobe!
